SYSA TRAVEL TRYOUTS

The following is an overview of the Swampscott Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) Travel Tryouts process. It’s important that all parents and players review the following.
It’s SYSA’s goal to provide an overview of the process to minimize confusion.

TRAVEL SOCCER
SYSA competes at three different grade group levels of Travel soccer within Essex County Youth Soccer Association (ECYSA). ECYSA comprises over 33 towns and cities within Essex County. ECYSA offers three levels of competition from Division 1 to Division 3. Travel teams play an 8 game season in both the fall and spring, with four games played at home and four away. Tryouts are held in the Spring for the following soccer year.

TRYOUTS
Travel players who intend to play Travel soccer are required to try-out. The tryouts are typically scheduled in June over a three day period with each grade group on a different day. It is important for players to try-out with their peer group for proper placement. The tryouts are conducted by SYSA Travel Director and the Skills committee.

DATES
The tryout dates are posted on our website (www.swampscottsoccer.com) under the Travel section. They are also advertised via email, FB and instagram. Tryouts Dates for Fall/Spring 2022/23 Soccer Season:

Monday, June 6th for G4 (Entering Grades 3 & 4 Fall 2022)

Tuesday, June 7th for G6 (Entering Grades 5 &6 Fall 2022)

Wednesday, June 8th for G8 (Entering Grades 7 & 8 Fall 2022) *Please note the SHS Girls Soccer program plans to allow for the option of 8th graders to tryout for the SHS JV team.  Players can play for both SYSA and SHS, but we ask all players/families to consider this before registering as deciding NOT to play SYSA after teams are made and submitted to ECYSA is problematic for team placement, coaches and remaining players.  No refunds will be granted.

Location: Phillips Park- Grass Fields

Times: Girls 5 - 6:00 pm, Boys 6:15 - 7:15pm (please arrive 20 min prior to tryout time in order to check-in).

Date conflict....In the event of a conflict, the player should attend the next appropriate age tryout. G4 players should attend the G6 tryout, G6 should attend the G8 tryout etc. Players need to prioritize the importance of attending their age appropriate tryouts.

EQUIPMENT
Players need to have soccer cleats, shin guards and water.

PARENTS
Parents do not need to stay for tryouts although they can observe from the sideline.

WEATHER
Due to time restrictions, SYSA will attempt to hold tryouts if at all possible on the scheduled day. Assume the tryouts are happening unless informed by email or consult the webpage (www.swampscottsoccer.com) for the latest news of any cancellation or postponement due to weather.

TRYOUT PROCESS
Players attending tryouts must sign in to receive a numbered colored jersey. It’s important to register online for the Travel season before tryouts. If you are a new player or a player moving to a new grade division, we will be taking your photo down at the field for registration. If you have never played Travel soccer, a copy of a school report card is required for proof of grade. All players make a team, the tryout is for placement purposes.

The tryout will consist of typically three to four different stations. The evaluators will be observing player passing and receiving, ball striking, and possession through small sided or full sided games depending on the age bracket. The tryouts are scheduled to last for 1 hour and players/parents should plan accordingly.  At the conclusion of tryouts, players return colored jerseys to the appropriate area. Players will be informed of the tryout results by the middle of July. Teams will be released to parents via email by August.
